TWELVE

ERIC

I looked Caleb over while he sat in the chair next to me, the dark hair framing his face, the hazel eyes I’d gotten so used to gazing into in Mexico, the silver hoop in his nose. It was like no time had passed at all and we were continuing on right from that last day.

The waitress set our burgers down and Caleb plucked his off his plate.

I stuffed a fry in my mouth. I couldn’t be held responsible for this, could I? I mean, we’d met before classes started. My class had been changed at the last minute to include him. It’s not like I met him in my class and started dating him. I should probably talk to Amit about it. There had to be a way to deal with this that wasn’t breaking school policy, that didn’t jeopardize my career. I drank some beer down, then picked up my burger.

“What are you thinking about?” Caleb wiped his mouth with a napkin, then sipped his beer.

“I’m uh…” I gave a soft snort. “I’m rationalizing our behavior.” That was exactly what I was doing. Coming here and seeing him again had made me lose sight of everything but being with him.

“Don’t think about it too much. I’m not.” He flashed me a goofy grin, then touched his forehead to my shoulder. “I’m so fucking happy you’re here.”

I kissed his cheek, my heart the lightest it’d been since he’d left me in Mexico. “Yeah, I’m happy I’m here, too.” Maybe that class change was a blessing in disguise, or maybe even a sign. It wouldn’t have been as easy to talk myself into coming here if it hadn’t have happened. I ate more burger and washed it down with beer.

Axel sauntered over to us, then dropped into a chair next to Caleb. “Dude, it stopped raining and everything’s drying up out there. We can get started on our gear.” He flicked his gaze to me, then held out a fist. “Hey, Eric. Nice to see you.”

I fist bumped him. “Yeah, it’s good to see you, too.” What was Axel going to think about all this?

“You got here just in time.” He patted Caleb on the shoulder. “He wasn’t coming out of that episode he had for me. But you? Damn, he climbed right into your arms.”

“Stop it, Axel. I would have come out of it on my own.” Caleb scoffed, then threw a peek at me.

Under his breath, Axel said, “Yeah, right.” He ticked his head at me. “So, what’s up? I haven’t seen my boy here so happy since Mexico.” He arched a brow.

Caleb darted his gaze to mine. “I’m going to let you tell him.” He ate the last bite of his burger.

“Tell me what?” Axel glanced at Caleb, then focused on me.

I sucked in a breath. Do I just tell him the truth or make something up? Axel was Caleb’s best friend. He should know. “There was a class change and I’m now going to be the lecturer for one of Caleb’s classes.
